  1. In today’s turmoil environment, the biggest leadership challenge facing the world will be restoring trust. As people are losing their ability to believe in leaders, the latter will have to work hard to repair the cracks in this relationship and get support to lead towards new directions.

  2. Maria is spot on. Trust is hard to acquire and so easy to lose. The current uncertainty only exacerbates this issue.

I can think of many things I would want from a leader or leadership team: vision, courage, good judgement, good fortune, motivation etc. I could go on of course, but what I'm creating is an almost impossible job spec.

At the end of the day, leaders need to be able to make people follow. Followers are looking to their leaders to take them to a better place.

In my experience, I have followed when I understand where the leadership is coming from. Therefore, what I require from leadership is authenticity. It engenders trust.

The great challenge of today's turmoil is that leaders are often new to their post and keen to make a mark. This pressure can bring about hasty decisions that do not seem consistent with their values, behaviours etc. When this happens, a climate is created in which employees become less confident to act on ideas. That is not good.

  3. In third world countries there are nobody available for leading the nations that is the basic issue.but things are now changing very fast specially in the Arab World that people are willing for a democratic leader. but it will take plenty of time for a leader to born who is a leader a truly capable futuristic leader.

  4. how about some liability?

I think hasty/poor decisions are sometimes exacerbated by the lack of real personal consequences/risk.

Take for example Fred Goodwin, Tony Hayward or why not George Bush (aka DubYa)... where their balls really on the line when they made decisions...?

  5. I think taking the long-term view is the biggest challenge.

Short-term, self serving decisions seem to be more of the norm now a days; leaders seem to be focusing on re-election (government) or quarterly reporting (businesses) or their annual bonus instead of taking the long-term view that is in the best interest of the next generation.
